MOST OFTEN it pays to start early on my virtual walking tour across the country, so I can complete a significant number of miles before the scheduled daily routine commences. My choice of neighborhood routes depends on several conditions: my energy level, the morning temperature, and the day's schedule ahead. This magical time might vary from a few minutes to several hours but it's always rewarding -- whether enhanced by a glorious sunrise or mysteriously lighted pathway.
And depending on the time, temperature, and tempo, the miles pass under my feet as each day progresses. I may spend my day in urban Palo Alto, but my virtual walking journal records the route of the First Transcontinental Railroad, crossing the Nevada desert just a few hundred miles east of the Utah border. This is the country of sand, sage and azure blue skies...and it's inspiring!
